Identification and characterization of phytoconstituents of ethanolic root extract of Clitoria ternatea L. utilizing HR-LCMS analysis

Medicinal plants act as a vital source in improving health and overcoming the side effects of modern-day medicine. Many evidence-based reports are present literature about benefits medicinal plants. Clitoria ternatea L. belongs to family Fabaceae is known be one important Ayurvedic plant whose uses specified mainly for modification nervous system activities. ‘Medhyarasayana’ formulations which used promote intellectual capacity, revive body tissue, serves major constituent ‘Medhyarasayana.’ Identification characterization active metabolites C. will help isolate phytoconstituents responsible central effects, isolated components can utilized future formulation new medicine various neurodegenerative disorders. In study, phytochemical evaluation ethanolic root extract (EECT) was performed using HR-LCMS technique. Preliminary qualitative analysis showed presence tannins, alkaloids, saponins, steroids, carbohydrate, protein, flavonoids triterpenoids extract. Almost 42 compounds were identified when EECT subjected analysis.

Treatment with 100 mg/kg of Clitoria ternatea aqueous root extract (CTR), for 30 days in neonatal and young adult age groups of rat, significantly increased acetylcholine (ACh) content in their hippocampi as compared to age matched controls. Increase in ACh content in their hippocampus may be the neurochemical basis for their improved learning and memory.
